Introduction

Since the Immigration Act of 1965 many people from Asia, Africa and the Middle East made their home in USA. They had brought with them their religious faith to make the United States of America a "multifaith"nation. Historically, America's democracy and freedom, and ideal of equality, had changed virtually every religious immigrant group. Still many Americans called themselves and their nation Christian. It was, however, seen that even among Christians, whenever a new group of people came along and they did not exactly fit with the existing old group, they went and started their own congregations. Over time, various religious groups, particularly Protestant groups, had sprung up all over the US.

For much of American history the country was Protestant. Protestants believed in freedom of conscience, the authority of the Bible, salvation only by faith and God's grace. Protestanism strengthened the ideas that America stood for: freedom, self-governance, and equality. Religious freedom permitted Protestantism to spread fast. An estimated half of all Americans were Protestants, worshipping in 300,000 congregations...
